For your first London visit
London is enormous, but the visitor experience becomes manageable when you think in neighbourhoods. Most central sights sit in Zones 1–2; the Studio Tour is a separate trip beyond central London.
Group nearby stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Contactless or Oyster is usually simplest. Each traveller needs their own.
Rail: tap in and out. Bus or tram: tap in only. Always use the same card or device.
Many famous places are closer than the Tube map makes them appear.
Fast for longer hops. Check the destination on the train as well as the line name.
Slower at busy times, but inexpensive, accessible and excellent for seeing the city.
Best for Soho, Covent Garden, South Bank and the City. Bring comfortable shoes.
Small customs: let passengers off first, stand on the right of escalators, and avoid stopping at ticket gates to check your phone.
